Kenya shells Somali coastal town

KISMAYO, Somalia, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- A Kenyan warship fired at a Somali coastal town considered the last stronghold of the Islamic militant group al-Shabaab, a Kenyan army spokesman said.

The ship fired 10 rounds into the town of Kismayo, after provocation by an al-Shabaab gunboat, the Voice of America said Tuesday. No injuries were reported.

Although Kenya is part of ANISOM, a multinational force it says is responsible for reducing al-Shabaab's influence in Somalia from control of most of central and southern Somalia to only a few towns, Kenyan army spokesman Emmanuel Chirchir said Kenya acted alone in the shelling attack.
