PHNOM PENH, Cambodia, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- A wild elephant Cambodian officials said destroyed crops, injured cattle and reportedly killed a man was moved to the Phnom Tamao Zoological Park.
The male elephant, estimated to weigh about 2 1/2 tons and be about 16 years old, was transferred to the zoo near Phnom Penh during the weekend after he was tranquilized, The Phnom Penh Post reported Wednesday.
Kheang Ying, deputy commune chief in Andong Teuk in the Butum Sakor district, said the elephant crushed his cousin four months ago.
"Since then, the villagers were afraid of this elephant," he said.
Heng Savoeun, Butum Sakor district police chief, told the Post he and other villagers would see the elephant walking peacefully with other elephants and that his vicious behavior was a more recent occurrence.
"In the last few months, we saw only this wild male elephant causing problems for the villagers and the traffic along the National Road 48," he said.
