KAMPALA, Uganda, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- A man who allegedly stole a cellular phone from an Ebola patient in a hospital in Uganda appears to have contracted the virus, officials said.
The suspect allegedly broke into an Ebola isolation ward in Kagadi Hospital and stole the phone from a patient being treated for the deadly hemorrhagic fever. The patient reported the theft before he died, the Daily Monitor reported Sunday.
Police detectives tracked the suspect after he used the phone to call friends. By the time police reached him, he had developed symptoms of Ebola and sought medication at the hospital.
He has allegedly confessed to stealing the phone and turned it over to police, the newspaper said.
