Moscow ban on gay parades to be appealed

MOSCOW, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- A gay pride activist says he will appeal to a European human rights court a ruling by a Russian court that bans gay pride parades for the next 100 years.

Moscow City Court Thursday upheld a ban by the Moscow government that will prohibit the parades until 2113, the Interfax news agency reported.

Nikolay Alexeyev said Friday he will appeal the decision to the European Court of Human Rights.

The European court previously ruled that Moscow's ban on gay pride parades between 2006 and 2008 was illegitimate.

In August 2011, organizers of the parade notified the Moscow government of their intention to hold the event in 2012 and for the next 100 years. The government did not authorize the parades, saying the events could cause unrest and were opposed by the majority of city residents.

Organizers had appealed the decision to a succession of courts, but each had rejected them.
