CAIRO, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- An Egyptian human rights group wants the former head of the military council and other officials tried for failing to perform their duties.
In a report on human rights, the Appropriate Communications Techniques for Development group said Hussein Tantawi, who was effectively the head of state until Mohamed Morsi became president, Mourad Mowafy, the former intelligence chief, and the North Sinai governor should be charged, al-Masry al-Youm reported. The group said the three did not respond appropriately to the killing of 16 military recruits in the Sinai.
The report also criticized Morsi's government, saying some of its actions "strike warning bells about the rights and freedoms in light of the choice of chief editors of national newspapers." Those include the suspension of a broadcast channel and the seizure of one edition of a newspaper.
Morsi, who has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, has also failed to respond to women's needs, the report said. He has named only two women to his Cabinet.
