France to mull ban on Roma camps

PARIS, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- French government ministers say they will meet next week to consider dropping a ban on Bulgarians and Romanians working in the country.

The discussion could defuse a controversy created by the dismantling of camps occupied by Roma from the two countries, Radio France International reported.

The ban was imposed by President Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007 when Bulgaria and Romania joined the European Union.

The EU requires that prohibitions on the free movement of labor be lifted by 2013.

France is one of several Europeans countries that limited the access of Romanian and Bulgarian migrants to labor markets.

Roma camps were raided in 2010 and Interior Minister Maunel Valls approved raids on camps near Lyon and Lille last week.
