NYALA, Sudan, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- A U.N. peacekeeper was killed and another injured in an attack by gunmen in Nyala, Sudan, the United Nations said.
The peacekeeper, from Bangladesh, was killed Sunday when gunmen fired on the staff at the U.N. mission's community policing center inside the Otash camp for internally displaced persons near the South Darfur state capital, the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur said in a release.
The armed men fled after a police unit returned fire.
Acting Joint Special Representative Aichatou Mindaoudou condemned the attack, which she said is a war crime under international law.
"The attack on our peacekeepers is cowardly, deplorable, and our thoughts go to the families and friends of the fallen and the injured," Mindaoudou said.
She called on the Sudanese government to make serious efforts to apprehend the attackers.
