France committed to Syria solution

VARCES, France, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- French President Francois Hollande reaffirmed his commitment to finding a diplomatic resolution to the conflict in Syria.

Hollande, speaking Saturday from Varces in southeastern France, said France supports the opposition in Syria and said the country is willing to work with the international community toward a political transition of power in Syria, Radio France Internationale reported.

Hollande's comments came amid criticism that he has been too passive in dealing with the crisis.

The president also said France has sent humanitarian aid to the Jordan-Syria border to help refugees. A French plane carrying nearly 100 tons of equipment left Saturday for Jordan.

The aid, Hollande said, is not only for victims of the fighting in Syria, but also rebel fighters working to overthrow President Bashar Assad's regime.
