TEHRAN, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Iran successfully test-fired the fourth generation of a short-range, high-precision ballistic missile Saturday, a military official announced.

"The fourth generation of high-precision Fateh-110 missiles with a range of over 180 miles was test-fired by the defense ministry's aerospace industries organization," Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier Gen. Ahmad Vahidi said.

He said the new Fateh-110 missiles can destroy land and sea targets, enemy concentration points, command centers, missile sites, ammunition dumps and radars with 100 percent precision.

The third-generation of the missile was test-fired in August 2010, Fars News Agency reported.

Iranian officials have said the country's growing arms development program in recent years serves defensive purposes and should not be perceived as a threat to other countries.
