LONDON, July 31 (UPI) -- British police say they have arrested a 17-year-old boy for allegedly making malicious comments against Olympic diving competitor and countryman Tom Daley.

The teenager, identified only by his Twitter handle @Rileyy_69, was arrested by Dorset police about 2 am. Tuesday at a guesthouse in Weymouth, reported USA Today.

Police said the teen was arrested following a series of heated tweets with Daley and others after Daley failed to medal in the 10-meter synchronized platform event.

In one of the tweets, @Rileyy_69 called Daley "overhyped."

In a later post, the teenager said, "I hold a gun license for shooting birds and I'm gonna shoot yours as well.''

Daley tweeted that he had been "giving it my all" and referred to some of the posters as "idiots."

Police said after the youth was detained, he helped them in their investigation. He also later apologized to Daley.

It is illegal in England to send messages considered menacing.
