SEOUL, July 26 (UPI) -- A South Korean lawyer says North Korea's 23-year-old supreme leader Kim Jong Un has been married since 2009.
North Korean state media this week confirmed Kim has a wife, a woman named Ri Sol Ju who had been seen in video and pictures of the leader at official events. She was first seen accompanying Kim at the 2011 funeral of his father Kim Jong Il, who ruled North Korea for 17 years.
Until Ri Sol Ju was identified by North Korean state television as Kim's wife she was a mystery women and little was known about her in the reclusive country, CNN said.
"Ri attended Geumsung's Second Middle School before going to China to study singing," South Korean lawmaker Jung Chung-rai said he learned at a closed session of South Korea's National Intelligence Service. Jung said Kim had been married for three years.
"She previously visited South Korea as a member of North Korea's cheering squad for Asian Athletics Championships in 2005," he said.
Some South Korean media have speculated the couple may have a young child born in 2010 but North Korean media has not commented on that and South Korean's intelligence agency has not confirmed the reports.
