Egypt apartment collapse kills 9

ALEXANDRIA, Egypt, July 15 (UPI) -- An 11-story apartment building in Alexandria, Egypt, collapsed and killed at least nine people, emergency officials said Sunday.

Civil Protection Department workers and soldiers were pulling away debris amid fears more victims would be found hours after the Saturday collapse, the Middle East News Agency, MENA, reported.

By midday Sunday, three people had been treated for injuries after the building crumpled in a dense working-class neighborhood, al-Masry al-Youm said.

Four neighboring buildings also sustained damage when the new apartment collapsed, reports said.

Rescue efforts were hampered by the narrowness of the streets in the centuries-old city where unlicensed construction is commonplace, MENA said.

President Mohamed Morsi announced on Facebook at 4 a.m. emergency shelters were being set up for survivors and others displaced by the collapse.

After Cairo, Alexandria is Egypt's second-largest city.
