Urns trapped by collapsed mall roof

ELLIOT LAKE, Ontario, July 9 (UPI) -- More than 30 families have been unable to retrieve cremation urns trapped inside a funeral home in the collapse of an Elliot Lake, Ontario, mall roof.

The cremains were at Alternative Funeral Services at the Algo Centre Mall, where the roof fell in June 23, killing two people and injuring 20 others, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Monday. The ashes are mostly of people who died within the year.

"For every set of ashes that [is] there, there's a family that loved these people whether it's brothers and sisters, moms and dads and grandparents -- they're all going through a heck of a time ...," Alternative Funeral Services owner John Pomerleau said. "It's bad enough that you lose someone, but not to be able to get somebody ..."

Pomerleau said he could not contact the families whose urns are trapped because the contact information is also trapped. He said he is requesting permission to enter the mall.
