PEEL, Ontario, July 4 (UPI) -- A garbage truck apparently carried the body of a man reported missing in a Toronto suburb across the U.S. border to a Michigan landfill, police said.
An employee at the Brent Run Landfill near Flint discovered the body Friday, the Toronto Star reported. It was positively identified Tuesday as that of Kevin Joseph Arendt, 38, of Mississauga, Ontario.
Arendt was last seen outside a Mississauga bar last week.
Dan Gudgel, who manages the landfill, said 30 to 40 trucks from the Greater Toronto area dump trash at Brent Run every day. Ken Hammond, a spokesman for U.S. Customs, said many trucks cross the border without any real search.
Police in Peel, Ontario, said they were trying to determine how Arendt ended up in a garbage truck. Constable George Tudos said foul play has been ruled out, but the case remains open until an autopsy has been completed.
Arendt moved to Mississauga recently to live with Kristen Jezeski, his girlfriend of several years. His younger brother, Eric, said Arendt was originally from Nekoosa, Wis., and had lived in a lot of places -- including Antarctica for several years -- before deciding to settle down and become a teacher.
"He was excited to get the next chapter of his life going," Eric Arendt said.
