JERUSALEM, July 1 (UPI) -- An Israeli military court Sunday sentenced a former Hamas commander to 54 life terms for his role in terror attacks that killed scores of Israelis.
The Judea Military Court sentenced Ibrahim Hamed,47, for 46 counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder and four counts of accessory to murder. In addition to the 46 deaths, more than 4,000 people were injured in the attacks, Israel Radio said.
Hamed was convicted last week of organizing, assisting, executing and planning bomb attacks in Jerusalem's Zion Square in December 2001; the Cafe Moment in Jerusalem in March 2002; Hebrew University in July 2002 and the Sheffield Club in May 2002.
Hamed joined Hamas in the 1980's and was imprisoned by the Palestinian Authority for his activities, but released in 2001.He then began organizing terror attacks in Israel, the radio said.
An eight-year manhunt resulted in his arrest in 2006.
