Quake rocks northwest China

BEIJING, June 30 (UPI) -- A 6.6-magnitude earthquake in China's Uighur Autonomous Area destroyed 104 houses Saturday, blocked roads and killed hundreds of cattle, officials said.

The China Earthquakes Network Center said the epicenter was in Xinjiang province near the border with Hejing and Xinyuan, Xinhua, China's official government news agency, said. The quake struck shortly after 5 a.m.

No deaths were reported, but officials said 34 people were injured and others left homeless after almost 5,000 houses were damaged. The Ministry of Civil Affairs sent 2,500 tents and 12,500 quilts to the region.

Most of the cattle were killed when holding pens were destroyed.

The quake caused major traffic disruption with cave-ins and landslides blocking highways in the mountainous region. Earthquakes in the range between 6.0 and 6.9 are described as strong and capable of causing significant damage in an area about 100 miles across.
