Newborn accompanies presidential hopeful

REYKJAVIK, Iceland, June 30 (UPI) -- A 37-year-old mother of three, including a 4-week-old baby, is running for president of Iceland as voters go to the polls Saturday.

Thora Arnorsdottir has given the baby a nickname, Sky, which means "cloud," but hasn't decided on a name, the BBC reported.

Many babies go nameless up to six months in Iceland, but she's put off the decision for a different reason: She's been too busy running for president to pick a name.

The baby often accompanies Arnorsdottir when she leaves her home in a suburb of Reykjavik at 8:30 a.m. to campaign.

Her partner of eight years, Svavar Halldorsson, often carries the baby. She has two other children -- ages 4 and 6 -- with him.

She says they have considered marrying in the summer but she's been busy campaigning.

Arnorsdottir was a well-known television reporter in Iceland when she announced two months ago she was running for president --- at a time when she was very pregnant.

She said she decided to run after requests from the public and being a mother played a role.

"I watch my children and I just think I want to do what I can to influence the society they're growing up in," she said. "Which values we are building, what kind of atmosphere there is. Talking with the elderly, they say 'You've got three kids? I had 10!'

"I've always worked hard and even though this job is being a president, it doesn't change anything. I think the challenge is a matter of getting used to the unusual idea."

Arnorsdottir said Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, who has been president for 16 years, has changed the role of the job from largely a figurehead position and made it overly political.

Grimsson wouldn't comment on her campaign but said "so far, we've achieved a state in Iceland where it's not particularly remarkable that a woman holds high office."

Vigdis Finnbogadottir, the country's first female president, was elected in 1980.
