Passengers, air crew thwart hijack attempt

BEIJING, June 29 (UPI) -- Passengers and crew aboard a Tianjin Airlines flight stopped an attempted hijacking Friday in China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, security officials said.

At least 10 people were injured when six people tried to hijack Tianjin Airlines Flight GS 7554 about 10 minutes after it departed Hotan Airport for the regional capital of Urumqi, Crienglish.com reported.

Two flight police officers, the head flight attendant and seven passengers suffered injuries during a fight with the hijackers, police said.

The plane returned to Hotan Airport and the six suspects were taken into custody, the regional public security bureau said.

Police did not indicate whether the hijackers took firearms aboard the plane or if the weapons were already on board.
