THESSALONIKI, Greece, June 28 (UPI) -- A group of Greek Cypriots and Golden Dawn party members trying to enter the Turkish consulate clashed with police in Thessaloniki Thursday, officials said.
The Cypriots and the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party were protesting the visit of Devlet Bahceli, leader of the Turkish opposition Nationalist Movement Party, to the city, Hurriyet Daily News reported.
Bahceli was in Greece as part of his tour of Balkan countries.
A group of about 60 Cypriot students and 40 members of Golden Dawn gathered in front of the Turkish general consulate to protest the leader's visit. A fight broke out between protesters and police officers protecting the consulate and ended with police firing tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Bahceli left Thessaloniki in the afternoon for Macedonia.
