TUNIS, Tunisia, June 25 (UPI) -- Tunisia's president and Parliament are at odds about whether the extradition of former Libyan Prime Minister Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi was illegal.
President Moncef Marzouki said his government's extradition of Libya's former prime minister Friday was illegal while the Parliament contended it was not, the British newspaper The Guardian reported.
The decision to extradite Mahmoudi came after a delegation visited Tripoli, which has close ties with Tunis, and found Libya's court system competent to hold a fair trial, Parliament said.
Mahmoudi fled Libya in August after rebel forces stormed Tripoli and had been held in Tunisia on charges of illegally entering the country.
Libya has said it believes Mahmoudi may be able to help investigators locate cash former ruler Moammar Gadhafi moved abroad.
Libya's government said it hopes Tunisia's decision to extradite Mahmoudi will encourage other countries to do likewise with other prominent figures from the Gadhafi regime, officials said.
