Israel strikes back at Gaza rocket fire

JERUSALEM, June 23 (UPI) -- The Israeli military said it knocked out a Palestinian rocket launcher in Gaza Saturday following a flurry of missiles around the country on the previous day.

The Israeli military said the air force thwarted the imminent launch of a rocket and blamed Hamas for the spate of attacks.

The Israeli military "will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli citizens, and IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) soldiers will continue to act against anyone who uses terror against Israel," the military said in a statement. "The terrorist organization Hamas holds full responsibility."

Hamas issued a statement condemning Israeli airstrikes on Palestinian bases and vowing reprisals, The Jerusalem Post said.

A barrage of rockets in southern Israel Saturday damaged a school and a factory in Sderot and seriously wounded one person.

Police in Sderot raised the alert level in the city and residents spent the day hunkered down in shelters.

"The bombardment on Sderot is endless," one resident told Ynetnews. "We remain in the shelters."
