Billboard firm nixes Greenpeace ad

EDMONTON, Alberta, June 20 (UPI) -- A Canadian advertising company won't explain why it refused to put up an environmental billboard for Greenpeace in Edmonton, Alberta.

Greenpeace spokesman Mike Hudema told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. the group approached Pattison Outdoor Advertising with its ad earlier this month and requested a specific billboard location in the capital of the oil-rich province.

The ad with only text and no imagery says "When there's a huge solar energy spill, it's just called a nice day. Green jobs, not more oil spills."

Hudema told the CBC Greenpeace got an e-mail from Pattison saying it couldn't provide the piece.

"Unfortunately, we do not have approval to proceed with the artwork," the advertiser said.

Repeated requests by the environmental group and the CBC for an explanation resulted in a "no comment" reply, the report said.

Alberta's extraction of oil from tar sands and vast pipeline network are considered by international critics to be particularly harsh on the environment and risky to various ecosystems.
