BOLOGNA, Italy, June 20 (UPI) -- Nearly 10,000 people were still in camps in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region a month after the first of two earthquakes hit the area, officials say.
The region in northern Italy is still being rattled by aftershocks, the Italian news agency ANSA reported. The National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology measured 12 overnight Tuesday, including a 3.5-magnitude temblor just before midnight.
Pope Benedict XVI has announced plans to visit the area next Tuesday.
The two quakes, which struck May 20 and May 29, killed 27 people. Property damage in a region that is a center of both manufacturing and farming has been estimated at 5 billion euros ($6.4 billion).
More than half of the 11,333 buildings inspected since the quake suffered significant damage with 4,698 declared completely unsafe and 2,658 partly unusable.
The number of homeless is estimated upwards of 14,000 with 9,652 living in tent camps.
The two quakes also destroyed ancient buildings and art.
