TOKYO, June 15 (UPI) -- The only remaining fugitive of the Aum Shinrikyo doomsday cult that released sarin nerve gas in a Tokyo subway in 1995 was captured Friday, police said.
Katsuya Takahashi, 54, was detained after being arrested in a cafe in Tokyo, Kyodo reported.
Takahashi was placed on a special wanted list in May 1995 for his alleged involvement in the subway attack in which 13 people died and more than 6,000 people became ill.
The Mainichi Shimbun reported Takahashi admitted to investigators he was involved in the incident, reportedly telling police, "I did it under the instructions of high-ranking cult members."
He told investigators there were "some aspects of the incident I don't know" when questioned about the purpose of the attack, the report said.
Takahashi was arrested after he fled from the dormitory of a company in Kawasaki, where he worked under a fake name. Another cult member, Naoko Kikuchi, was arrested June 3, the newspaper said.
