ISAF: Taliban commander killed

DAMAN, Afghanistan, June 14 (UPI) -- A Taliban commander and an insurgent were killed in Afghanistan Thursday by an Afghan-led security force supported by coalition forces, military officials said.

The International Security Assistance Force Joint Command said in a release the commander, Fayez Jan, and the insurgent were killed in an operation in the Daman district of Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan.

Officials said Jan constructed, distributed and directed placement of improvised explosive devices in the Daman and Shah Wali Kot districts and at the time of his death had been planning to launch an IED attack against Afghan and coalition convoys in the area.

Two Afghan males injured in the operation were taken to coalition medical facilities, officials said.

The release said a combined Afghan-coalition force Thursday also captured in the Nawah-ye Barakzai district of Helmand province a Taliban leader who had armed and coordinated movement of Taliban insurgents throughout the region.

Two suspects also were detained in Nawah-ye Barakzai and several others were detained in the Kajaki district of Helmand province, the release said.
