Vancouver cops still charging 2011 rioters

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, June 12 (UPI) -- Vancouver's police chief said detectives are recommending 82 more charges against 25 people related to hockey riots that rocked the city a year ago.

Chief Jim Chu issued a statement Tuesday with a poster of the 10 most wanted people for "particularly violent" crimes allegedly committed when the city erupted in an alcohol-fueled riot last June 15.

"For those rioters who think they've gotten away with it, investigators are still conducting active investigations and we expect to recommend charges on a further 100 individuals in the coming months," he said. "By the time we are done, we expect that we will exceed 300 persons charged with over 900 criminal charges."

Chu said that would make the multi-force investigation the most productive for arrests in Canadian history.

The city hosted a giant downtown rally for fans of the Vancouver Canucks, who were playing the Boston Bruins for the Stanley Cup in the 7th and final game.

Millions of dollars of damage was done by looters and arsonists who torched cars and buildings. Scores were injured.

Police appealed to the public for digital pictures and video of the rioting. Chu said the electronic forensic investigation had been "groundbreaking" and others had taken notice.

"We've had inquiries from police agencies around the world asking about how we cataloged all the video," he said.
