BEIJING, June 12 (UPI) -- China's Ministry of Public Security said police in 150 cities destroyed more than 100,000 illegal guns Tuesday.
Some 280 tons of illegal explosives are slated for disposal within the coming days, the ministry said.
Most of the weapons were seized in police raids, although several were brought forward by citizens. Half of the guns were confiscated as a part of a national campaign that started in February and will run through December.
Xinhua news agency reported police have detained some 7,800 suspects involved in possession of illegal firearms and explosives and have busted more than 180 criminal organizations.
Criminal cases involving guns have dropped by 9.7 percent since January compared with last year, the ministry said.
