Helicopter wreckage found in Peru

OCONGATE, Peru, June 10 (UPI) -- Search crews have found the scattered wreckage of a helicopter that had been missing in a mountainous area of Peru since Wednesday, authorities said.

The wreckage of the helicopter was located Saturday scattered in a more than 650-foot radius on the mountain Mama Rosa in the Ocongate district in Quispicanchis province, said National Police of Peru Gen. Raul Salazar.

The helicopter from the company Helicusco had 12 passengers and two crew members aboard, CNN reported.

Rescue teams were searching for the 14 people on board in 15 degrees below zero temperatures, though Attorney Gilberto Vargas Cuba told Andina it is not likely they survived.

The rugged terrain of the mountainous region, low temperatures, and frequent rain and snowfall have made rescue efforts difficult, Andina reported.
