"It has been uncomfortable and intimidating for him," Mikkel Hertz, the head of TV2 news, told the public broadcaster DR. "We are, of course, providing him with the help he needs. We support him and have offered counseling."

Christiana, a former army barracks that had been closed, was occupied in 1971 by residents of the surrounding neighborhood, becoming a large hippie commune. For years, the government took a laissez faire attitude toward the neighborhood but in recent years, officials have been trying to curb drug dealing and end Christiana's independent status.

Hertz told Journalisten the attack was carried out by "biker types." But he said the reporter was shaken by the "lack of empathy" from area residents who did not try to help him.

The attackers also took the reporter's cell phone and forced him out of Christiana once he had removed all his clothes.
