Students get 8 years in prison for banner

ISTANBUL, Turkey, June 7 (UPI) -- Two Turkish students were sentenced Thursday to eight years in prison for holding a banner demanding free education at a protest in 2010.

The banner, which read: "We want free education, we will get it," was held by Utku Ayar, Berna Yilmaz and Ferhat Tuzer, who had organized the protest March 14, 2010, during a meeting between Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and members of the Roma community.

Hurriyet Daily News reported Ayar was acquitted, but Yilmaz and Tuzer were sentenced to eight years and five months in prison.
