Report: Militia seizes Libyan airport

TRIPOLI, Libya, June 4 (UPI) -- Militia members seized control of the international airport in Tripoli, Libya, security officials said Monday.

A security official said a dispute with the national government apparently led to two platoons of the militia from Tarhouna moving into the facility overnight, CNN reported.

The disappearance of a militia leader on the road to the airport Sunday prompted the dispute. The Libyan government dispatched envoys to meet with the militia's leaders Sunday and discussions were still taking place Monday, government Deputy Foreign Minister Abdul Karim Ahmed Bazama said.

Bazama said he did not know the whereabouts of the militia leader or the circumstances of his disappearance.

CNN reported that armed militia members escorted passengers to cars, describing the situation as an evacuation of the terminal, but said it was unclear whether flights were canceled.
