12 dead in Nigeria church bomb blast

BAUCHI, Nigeria, June 3 (UPI) -- A suicide car bomber in northern Nigeria killed 12 people Sunday at a Pentecostal church, witnesses said.

The number of people injured in the blast in the city of Bauchi was not reported.

Witnesses told the BBC a man attempted to drive a car through the fence at Harvest Field Pentecostal church. When he was unable to break through the fence, he detonated the bomb, killing people inside and those standing outside the church.

Witnesses said they suspected the bomb was meant to explode at a larger church on the property.

No group has claimed responsibility for the incident, though radical Islamic group Boko Haram has carried out similar attacks in recent months, the BBC said.

Boko Haram, which translates to "no to Western education," has killed hundreds of people in attacks on churches, schools, police stations and other government buildings, and wants to impose Sharia law in Nigeria, the BBC said.
