South Sudan orders return of oil revenues

JUBA, South Sudan, June 2 (UPI) -- South Sudan President Salva Kiir is demanding the return of $1 billion in oil revenues that went missing in 2005 and 2006.

The Sudan Tribune said Kiir has issued an letter to 75 former and current officials demanding the return of the money, which disappeared when oil revenues were transferred from the government of National Unity to the autonomous government of South Sudan in Juba.

"A letter was sent out last week to over 75 former and current senior officials in an effort to recover stolen funds," a presidential statement said Saturday. The money is allegedly sitting in foreign bank accounts.

In a public address on Friday, Kiir expressed his concern over "the level of corruption in South Sudan."
