'Disgraceful' conduct Mountie not fired

EDMONTON, Alberta, May 23 (UPI) -- A Mountie in Alberta who admitted to allegations of sexual activity, harassment and drinking was demoted and transferred instead of being fired, the force said.

Details emerged this week about a Royal Canadian Mounted Police hearing in Edmonton last November in which Staff Sgt. Don Ray acknowledged the allegations related to incidents that occurred from 2006 to 2009, the QMI Agency reported.

An RCMP adjudication board's findings of agreed facts found Ray kept beer and rum in his office when he was in charge of the headquarters' polygraph unit.

Ray also admitted accusations he had sex with subordinates in the bureau, exposed himself to a female worker, sent inappropriate e-mails and tampered with prospective employees by enhancing their job applications, the report said.

The hearing's findings called it "disgraceful" conduct, but recommended against firing him. Instead, the board and elected to demote him by one rank, fine him 10 days' pay, and recommend a transfer and counseling.

Ray has reportedly been transferred to work at an undisclosed location in British Columbia, the Vancouver Sun said.

The RCMP Public Complaints Commission is seeking public input into how he was disciplined, the Sun said.
