Aid workers in Afghanistan missing

KABUL, Afghanistan, May 23 (UPI) -- Five aid workers were kidnapped in a remote area of northeastern Afghanistan, a government spokesman said.

Two women and three men working for the humanitarian group Medair, based in Switzerland, were bringing food to women and and children in a mountainous area of Badakhshan province Tuesday when they were kidnapped, CNN reported.

Abdul Marouf Rasekh, a spokesman for the governor, said the workers had not informed security forces they would be in the area.

The kidnappers had not yet contacted the government or aid group, CNN said.
