China: 115 students suffer food poisoning

CHANGSHA, China, May 22 (UPI) -- Food poisoning struck more than 100 high school students in Changsha, China, after they ate food from a snack stand, officials said Tuesday.

After dining on bean jelly and cold noodles from a snack stand outside No. 2 High School of Longhui county Sunday, about 115 students fell ill, suffering from dry mouth, vomiting and skin irritation, Xinhua news agency reported.

The students were hospitalized. By 1 p.m. Tuesday, 110 returned to school while five remained in treatment, one of whom was in serious condition.

Disease Control authorities found nitrite in the food and detained one of the snack stand owners Monday. Police are searching for the other owner.
