Crime reporter's body found

HERMOSILLO, Mexico, May 19 (UPI) -- Authorities said they discovered the body of a crime reporter in a plastic bag just south of Sonora state in Mexico.

Marco Antonio Avila Garcia was abducted Thursday by three hooded men from a car wash in northwest Sonora. His body was discovered Friday, bearing signs of torture and a message regarding drug trafficking, CNN reported.

A reporter for El Regional de Sonora and Diario de Sonoroa, Avila Garcia, 39, covered the public security beat.

National Human Rights Commission President Raul Plascencia Villanueva called for the arrest of those responsible to send a "clear message that there will be no tolerance for those who commit crimes against journalists."

Earlier this month, authorities discovered the dismembered bodies of two newspaper photographers in plastic bags in the eastern state of Veracruz.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has tallied more than 45 journalists missing or dead in Mexico since 2006.
