IAEA chief to visit Tehran

VIENNA, May 18 (UPI) -- The International Atomic Energy Agency Friday raised the level of its talks with Iran with an announcement that its director is going to Tehran.

Yukiya Amano is to be in Iran for one day for direct negotiations with Saeed Jalili, Iran's top negotiator, The New York Times reported. Herman Nackaerts, Amano's deputy, who has been leading talks with Iran in Vienna over access to its Parchin military base, will accompany Amano.

The IAEA wants nuclear inspectors to have full access to the base because of suspicions that triggers for nuclear weapons are being developed there. Iran, which maintains its nuclear program is only for power generation, has refused.

Talks are scheduled Wednesday in Baghdad on Iran's nuclear program with the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany. The IAEA argues opening Parchin to inspection would be a signal Iran is sincere about its intentions.
