Suicide bombers rush provincial office

KABUL, Afghanistan, May 17 (UPI) -- Eleven people, including six police officers, died in a suicide attack on a provincial governor's compound in Afghanistan Thursday, officials said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the strike at the compound in the provincial capital of Farah province, saying it was carried out by "martyrdom-seeking" fighters, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Abdul Rauf Ahmadi, a regional police spokesman, said the provincial governor and the deputy governor of Farah were unharmed, CNN reported.

The attackers met police resistance when they tried to raid the compound and were forced to detonate their explosives before reaching the governor's office, Ahmadi said.

The dead included a civilian and all four attackers, government officials said.

Farah province borders Iran and shares a border with Helmand province, another hot spot.

The Interior Ministry praised the "valor and dedication" of Afghan police in fending off the insurgents.

The attack came days before a NATO summit, during which the allies are to discuss plans to withdraw nearly all of their combat troops, transitioning security responsibilities to Afghan forces by 2014.
