Sniper fire erupts in Lebanese city

BEIRUT, Lebanon, May 17 (UPI) -- Sporadic sniper and rocket fire erupted in northern Lebanon Thursday killing a 13-year-old boy and injuring at least three other people, the military said.

The early morning incidents prompted Prime Minister Najib Mikati to order security forces to erect checkpoints in Tripoli and arrest anyone carrying arms in public, The (Beirut) Daily Star reported.

The fighting broke out after an Islamist supporter of the Syrian opposition was arrested and accused of belonging to a terrorist organization.

The arrest of Shadi Mawlawi, 25, sparked clashes between opponents and supporters of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The Lebanese Army said it responded throughout the morning to sporadic sniper fire in several Tripoli neighborhoods. Three rocket-propelled grenades were fired in the rival neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.
