Former hostage accused of aiding capture

CALI, Colombia, May 17 (UPI) -- Former Colombian politician Sigifredo Lopez was arrested for allegedly aiding in the kidnapping of himself and 11 others who were later killed, police said.

Lopez was arrested Wednesday after guerrilla leader "El Cabezon" told prosecutors Lopez assisted the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia's 30th front with the kidnapping of himself and 11 of his colleagues in April 2002.

After his arrest, Lopez was taken to Bogota for interrogation, Colombia Reports said.

Lopez was the only survivor of the group, the others killed by guerrillas in 2007.

Lopez, who ran an unsuccessful campaign for mayor of Cali last year, failed to appear at several hearings regarding his alleged cooperation with the guerrilla group.

Last year, his campaign issued a statement in response to the allegations, alleging that "El Cabezon" had "agreed to incriminate the former deputy [Lopez] because he was promised that after doing so he would be allowed to leave the country with political asylum and start a new life in Europe."
