ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, May 16 (UPI) -- A key NATO supply route for the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan is being reopened, the government of Pakistan said.
The route was closed six months ago after U.S. aircraft mistakenly attacked two Pakistani border outposts killing 24 Pakistani soldiers.
The new accord will up the cost of the Afghan war by approximately $365 million a year, McClatchy Newspapers reported Wednesday.
Under the agreement, Pakistan will receive a still-to-be-decided fee of $1,500 to $1,800 for each supply truck that passes through the country en route to Afghanistan.
In return, Pakistan will provide security for the supply trucks.
Officials in Washington said they don't know how much of the extra cost will be borne by the United States.
American and Pakistani negotiators are still working out final details of the new supply agreement, expected to be completed early next week.
