Turkey: 11 generals arrested

ANKARA, Turkey, May 10 (UPI) -- Eleven suspects, all either active or retired generals, were jailed Thursday for alleged involvement in Turkey's 1997 non-violent military coup, officials say.

The Ankara 11th High Criminal Court referred 11 out of 17 suspects for arrest after eight public prosecutors interrogated them all. The 11 arrested included six active duty generals and five retired generals, Today's Zaman reported.

Among them is retired Gen. Cetin Saner, known to have threatened to impale an interior minister during the coup, the report said.

Turkey's government launched an investigation into the coup, and as of Thursday, has arrested 50 people accused of playing a major role.

The Feb. 28, 1997 military coup non-violently forced the resignation of Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan of the Welfare Party amid concerns of rising religious fundamentalism in the country.
