Wife beater sentenced to read two books

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia, May 8 (UPI) -- A Saudi man found guilty of beating his wife must read two books on relations between spouses in Islam and take a test on the material, a judge has ruled.

The judge told the man he must also memorize five of the 30 parts of the Koran along with 100 sayings by the Prophet Mohammed, Gulf News reported Tuesday.

The husband was also ordered to pay his wife $1,866.

The woman had complained to security authorities that her husband hit her during an argument over visiting her cousin in the hospital.
