HIV-positive sex workers charged in Greece

ATHENS, Greece, May 3 (UPI) -- Criminal charges were presented in Greece Thursday against five prostitutes who allegedly tested positive for the HIV virus.

The women will be charged in an Athens court with intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm, a felony, Kathimerini reported Thursday.

Another 12 sex workers, alleged to be HIV carriers, will be in court Friday on similar charges.

The arrests came as hundreds of brothel visitors contacted a helpline to arrange for tests, and Greek Health Minister Andreas Loverdos called for criminalizing unprotected sex with prostitutes, the newspaper said.
