South Korea displays 2 new missiles

SEOUL, April 20 (UPI) -- South Korea has two new missiles that can make precision attacks on targets in North Korea, the military says.

The information was released Thursday because of public concerns about the country's safety, Chosun Ilbo reported. Last week, North Korea launched a rocket, ostensibly to put a satellite into orbit, that broke up shortly after it took off.

The Hyunmu-3 and Hyunmu-2 cruise missiles were displayed for the news media. Maj. Gen. Shin Won-sik told reporters the missiles are "capable of striking targets anywhere in North Korea."

The Hyunmu-3 can be launched from mobile platforms or from naval vessels, officials said. It has a range of about 1,000 miles and was described as being more accurate than the U.S. Tomahawk missile.

The Hyunmu-2 has a range of about 200 miles -- set by South Korea's missile treaty with the United States. It can be targeted within 100 feet and destroy areas as big as a soccer field, officials said.
