BEIRUT, Lebanon, April 5 (UPI) -- The head of the Lebanese Forces Party says shots were fired at his home in Beirut in what may have been an attempt to assassinate him.
Samir Geagea said at a news conference a few hours later that the shooting occurred at around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, The Daily Star reported. His party said guards located the shooter's position and found shell casings there.
Leaders of the March 14 coalition visited Geagea on Thursday and suggested that opponents of their group want to return Lebanon to chaos. Adef Majdalani, a member of Parliament representing the Future Movement, said those responsible include "every person against March 14 forces, against Lebanon's freedom, dignity and democracy and against pluralism and openness."
Majdalani suggested that the March 14 group's support of uprisings in other countries, including neighboring Syria, may have sparked the shooting. Syria has been blamed for a number of assassinations in Lebanon, including the bombing in February 2005 that killed former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and 21 others.
