Ex-Lebanese general released from prison

KASLIK, Lebanon, April 3 (UPI) -- A former Lebanese army general convicted of giving Israel information about Hezbollah and one of its allies was released from prison Tuesday, his lawyers said.

Fayez Karam, a member of the Free Patriotic Movement, a Lebanese political party and Hezbollah ally, arrived at his home in Kaslik, north of Beirut, Tuesday after visiting FPM leader Michael Aoun, The (Beirut) Daily Star reported.

Karam, 62, was found guilty in September of contacting Israeli intelligence and providing information on Lebanon's Iranian-backed Hezbollah and FPM.

Karam was not found guilty of spying.

He had led the Lebanese army's anti-terrorism and counter-espionage unit during the 1980s and had close ties to Aoun, who declared a "war of liberation" against the Syrian army in Lebanon in 1989, The Daily Star said.
