Two deadly blast attacks in Kenya

MOMBASA, Kenya, April 1 (UPI) -- Two grenade attacks in the Kenyan coastal town of Mombasa killed at least one person and injured more than 26 people, officials said Sunday.

The first blast happened around 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the town of Mtwapa, just north of Mombasa, the Sunday Nation newspaper reported.

Police said the second blast came soon after and targeted an outdoor Christian prayer meeting near the Mombasa Municipal Stadium.

Casualty reports were still sketchy Sunday.

An unidentified police officer told the newspaper three of the injured were in critical condition.

"It is hard to tell whether it was a grenade or a bomb, we are still investigating," he said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, although similar attacks have taken place in the capital, Nairobi, since last October when Kenya sent troops into neighboring Somalia to fight Muslim extremists.
