Unpaid Tripoli hotel bill leads to siege

TRIPOLI, Libya, March 25 (UPI) -- A 6-month-old unpaid hotel bill at a luxury hotel in Tripoli, Libya, led to a militia attack and abduction of a manager, hotel management reported.

The Turkish-owned Rixos Hotel was closed until Monday after the Saturday attack in which general manager Sukru Kocak was abducted at gunpoint, CNN reported.

Kocak had asked a senior militia official identified as Ali Daw to settle up a 6-month-old bill or leave, the report said.

Soon after, more than 20 armed men stormed the hotel, shooting into the air. They reportedly took Kocak to one of the offices of one of the Zintan militias, where he said he was beaten.

CNN said the manager was freed after Turkish consular officials contacted the Libyan National Transitional Council government.

Kocak reportedly suffered injuries to both knees and a possible burst eardrum.

The various Zintan militia groups were instrumental in bringing down dictator Moammar Gadhafi's regime with international military support.
